Creating Capacity As A Leader – Podcast: S02E011

As a leader, it is important that you are effective in managing things and leading people. Your use of and investment in the time that you have are the keys to doing both of these tasks well. In today’s episode of Monday Morning Moments, I offer 5 questions that will help you discern what you need to hold on to and what you need to delegate as it relates to the investment of your time and attention. You will also learn 4 D’s of Productivity that can help you manage your physical and digital inbox.

Be Grateful

I encountered a person at Starbucks last week who demonstrated a true spirit of gratitude in his life.  His final comment to me as I was leaving with a mocha in my hand was, “I can’t believe I get to do what I do!” It made me think about the opportunities in my own life. As an entrepreneur, I sometimes stress over where the next client is going to come from. I pray for provision and persevere through moments of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. These moments, while mostly brief in duration, can cloud my vision and crowd out a spirit of being grateful for the opportunity to “do what I do!” In my best moments, I am grateful for the variety of clients that I get to collaborate with, the nature of the work that I do, and the calling that God has led me to.

This moment also made me reflect on other aspects of my life for which I am grateful including:

  • A God who sent His Son to save me
  • A wife who loves me
  • Five boys who look to me for guidance and wisdom
  • Friends who encourage and inspire me
  • Moments of opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of other people

What if, instead of focusing on the stress that screams for our attention, we committed each day to be grateful for things we have been given, the relationships we have been entrusted with, and the opportunities that have been presented to us. Being grateful positions us with the right spirit to:

  • Give – back to others and share what we have learned
  • Grow – the opportunities we have been blessed with
  • Guide – the people we lead and influence through our example of thankfulness and our engagement in their lives
  • Go – for the eternal and not the temporal and fleeting things of this life

During this time of thanksgiving, I encourage you to make a list of the things and people that you are grateful for. In fact, this is a great habit to do on a daily and weekly basis. Even on the worst of days, you can be grateful for something in your life. When you physically write down what you are grateful for, it can lift your spirits and inspire you to be resilient, persevere, and strive to make the most of the moments that you have been blessed with. Being grateful also pushes you to be the best version of yourself to those who need you most.

Through our work with high achievers and great leaders, we have found that the best leaders are grateful and practice gratitude as their foundational attitude. Gratefulness for this life and all that it brings with it can be a powerful force in our lives.  Seek first to enlarge the lives of others and all of the things that we so often worry about will take care of themselves.

3 Ways to Encourage Others

We all need encouragement! No one is suffering from too much encouragement in their lives! Very few people are begging for people to stop with the positive comments and uplifting reinforcements of their strengths, performance, and impact. Often, we find the exact opposite! Through research and experience in working with companies, organizations, and sports teams, we typically discover that people are suffering from a total lack of encouragement! In these environments, archaic leaders look at encouragement as a soft concept and believe that pay is a better motivator than praise. They falsely question why they would encourage someone who accomplished what they are paying them to do.

The word encouragement comes from the Latin word “cor” meaning “heart.” Encourage is really a strong word that literally means to give heart, strength, and confidence to others. The best leaders, teams, and organizations view encouragement as one of the keys to engagement. Employees emotionally engage in their work and become fully committed when they feel supported and trusted. Transformational leaders know that encouragement is a tangible investment in the emotional bank account of their employees and culture that yields tremendous returns both in the short and long term.

Here are 3 ways that the best leaders encourage the people they lead and influence:

  • Communicate Belief – Great leaders communicate the 4 most critical words when it comes to encouragement: “I Believe In You!” They do this through their words – actually saying this powerful statement – and through their actions. When employees feel like their leaders believe in them and their potential, they will rise to any challenge and fully commit their heart and head to achieving the goal! Two key questions for you as a leader are: Do the people you lead and influence know you believe in them, and how are you demonstrating this?
  • Instill Trust – Great leaders instill trust in others by doing two things. First, they give up control of tasks. They learn to delegate effectively to team members who are ready and able to take on that responsibility. And while they still coach and guide them, they also learn to give up control of the how, or the process to accomplish the task, knowing that there could be a better and different way to get to the same result. This inspires creativity for the team members and innovation within the culture. When you give up control, people feel encouraged by your belief and trust in their abilities and potential!
  • Match Responsibility With Authority – Great leaders not only give responsibility to others, but they also grant them the authority to carry out the task. People must have the authority – ability to make decisions, invest money, commit resources – that aligns with the responsibility that is given. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel is a perfect example of this as they give every employee the responsibility and authority to anticipate and fulfill the needs of their guests up to $2000 per incident no matter what their title is within the organization.

As a leader and influencer, you can be a force that brings encouragement and support to others. As you think about the different roles that you play in life, I encourage you to think about who you need to encourage this week. Use these techniques to help you in the process. Also, make sure that you are authentic, specific, and timely in your praise and encouragement. People know when it is fake, and they will not receive it nor will it inspire them to greatness.
